What is Family ID?

Family ID is provided by the DOCDB. This ID is assigned to the patents in the same simple family.

The DOCDB is the EPO's master documentation database with worldwide coverage. It contains bibliographic data, abstracts, citations, and the DOCDB simple patent family.

In principle, simple family members should have the same family ID. However, extended family members may have multiple family IDs.
